How to get the most from business networking

Networking is about building worthwhile relationships with likeminded businesspeople in order to potentially introduce them to your clients or contacts. Networking is first and foremost about helping other people.

As the Author and motivational speaker Zig Ziglar said “You can have everything in life you want, if you will just help enough other people get what they want”

Before you invest in joining a business networking organisation or go to your next networking event keep in mind these 4 things:

  1. Remember the purpose of networking

The purpose is to build relationships, it’s certainly not a get rich quick scheme. It’s what you can do for other people not what can you sell to them.

  1. Give it time

Just because you have paid your money and joined a networking group, don’t expect business straight away. It takes time to build the type of trust that is needed before people are comfortable to recommend you.

  1. You have to be in it to win it!

If you want to get the most out of networking, you need to be in attendance. You need to show up consistently.

  1. Follow up

There is no point in networking if you are just going to collect a load of business contact details but do nothing with them. Make sure that you follow up! Preferably within a few days either with an email or better still a telephone call.
