GAL Business Update July 2023 Final

Last week I attended the latest meeting of the Gatwick Consultative Committee ( & my other observations from the meeting include:

  • Operations & Staffing – The Airport has been working closely with operational businesses to plan for increased staffing needs as well as address some of the issues from threatened & actual strike action.
  • Routes – 30 airlines operated short haul flights to 150 destinations while 49 long haul destinations are being served from China, India, the Middle East to North America.
  • Investment – After an understandable pause due to Covid, investment into passenger facilities is well underway with a massive project to refurbish the North Terminal Departure Lounge alongside airside taxiway improvements.  The next 10 years is likely to see £2.6bn invested by Gatwick with a commitment for significant local procurement & jobs.
  • Sustainability/2nd Decade of Change – Further commitments this year include £250m investment towards achieving net zero for Airport emissions by 2030.
  • Air Space – The way aircraft are routed throughout the UK & the EU is being examined to make greater efficiencies in our airspace. There was also a discussion on how Gatwick leading the way in incentivising Airlines to utilise the quietest aircraft to minimise disturbance.
  • Community – Investment continues in supporting the local communities through events & strong links with STEM, skills & education
  • Economy – Gatwick has continued to engage with businesses and representative groups to open up opportunities & discuss how the development of the Airport can bring real economic benefit to the region & beyond
