21 Jan Gatwick Airport Railway Station Upgrade
Gatwick Airport railway station is set for a £150m upgrade. This upgrade will remove many of the challenges passengers face when using the station today and it will prepare the station for future passenger growth. As well as benefiting those using the station to commute, it will support the Airport to play an even greater role in the local economy, helping millions of international visitors each year to access London and the South East.
With station passenger numbers increasing from 14 million in 2010 to 20 million today, and with numbers expected to reach over 30 million within the next decade, this important investment is essential and will transform the railway station for the 21st century.
The station upgrade will deliver twice as much space for passengers, transform the station’s accessibility and help to reduce delays across the south east.
It will do this by doubling the size of station’s concourse, and it will make it much easier for passengers to board, alight and change trains quickly and access the airport. This will be achieved through wider platforms, five new lifts, eight new escalators, new staircases and new wayfinding.
These upgrades mean reduced crowding on the platforms, delivering fewer delays across the whole network by helping our team to dispatch trains quickly and keep trains running on time. The upgrade will deliver a transformed station, with much improved access, especially for wheelchair users and passengers with heavy luggage.
The upgrade will be delivered between 2020 and 2023 with two years of intensive platform works between May 2020 and May 2022. During these two years, a 30mph speed restriction will be in place and platforms will be unavailable. These platform works mean that there is no option but to develop a dedicated timetable as the Brighton Main Line, the railway running through Gatwick Airport can accommodate fewer trains per hour.
GTR, the operator of Thameslink, Southern and Gatwick Express is working with stakeholders across the region. We are using the lessons of previous major infrastructure works and will provide a dedicated timetable, consistent across the two years of works, that delivers as many journey options for passengers while maintaining punctuality and reliability.
