24 Sep Extinguisher Training…………… Do I or my staff need it?
There is a view held by some business owners that staff do not need training in the use of fire extinguishers, that this is dangerous and should not be attempted. This is normally driven by the fear of staff becoming injured and ultimately litigation should a member of staff become injured.
It should be noted that all fires have a small beginning such as a lit match, smouldering computer or even an overheating motor on a machine. All these fires are manageable but left unchecked they’ll develop, and in the worst-case lead to the loss of a premise this not only impact on your ability to deliver your products but also a loss of qualified staff.
The Chief Fire Officers Association estimated that 60% of private companies never recover from a fire and most small businesses are gone within two years of suffering a fire. The statistics speak for themselves – 94% of the time portable fire extinguisher are used it puts out the fire typically within the initial two minutes, 80% of all fires can be successfully extinguished using portable fire extinguishers.
We recommend that a third of your staff should receive formal training in the use of fire extinguishers.
