4 Powerful Ways to develop a positive mindset- Gary Morgan

Our lives are a reflection of our attitude. It can be easy to become negative and cynical toward the world without even noticing.  With the constant exposure to tragedy and injustice that we are exposed to daily, we can quickly start to experience our own heartache and distress. Not only is this negative attitude preventing you from enjoying your life fully, but it can also have a significant impact on your health and environment.

Here are four powerful ways that you can begin to develop a positive mindset and change your life:

  1. Keep a Gratitude Journal

There are times when just one thing can ruin your whole day, and just one cross word with a loved one, friend, or colleague can take over all of your thoughts and spoil any positive parts of your day. The good news is that it doesn’t have to be that way. You can set an intention and focus on the positive parts of your day. Keeping a gratitude journal is a great tool to use to help with this. Either every morning or every evening before you go to bed, write down 3 things that you’re grateful for. You will be amazed at how such a simple thing can have a major impact on your attitude. One of my clients does this every evening with her little girl. They choose 3 things to be grateful for and she is often surprised by the basic things that her daughter lists. For example, spending time with her daddy.

  1. If it doesnt challenge you it wont change you

Fred Devito Co-Founder of Exhale and co-author of Barre Fitness says, “If it doesn’t challenge you, it won’t change you”.

It’s important to ensure that you don’t allow any uncomfortable or unplanned events to render you helpless or worse still worthless. Learn to welcome challenges as a new experience and an opportunity for growth and positive change in your life.

  1. Expression deepens impression

Your life is like a self-fulfilling prophecy. If you use words such as hard, hectic, stressful, boring when referring to your life. Then that is what it will. The more you say those kinds of words the deepen their impression on your mind, your thinking, and your life. I’m not suggesting that your life is not stressful or even boring at times. I am saying if that becomes your entire focus day in and day out your life will be a self-fulfilling prophecy. It’s important to reframe those words with ones that will have less of an impact on you. For example, instead of saying my life is boring, say I did not get as much done as I would have liked today. Tomorrow I will add more variety to my day. The words you use have a lot more power than you think. How you talk about your life is how your life will be. Your mind hears what you say about yourself and your life. remember, if you refer to your life as boring, hectic, chaotic, that’s is exactly how it will be.

  1. Dont Get Dragged into Other Peoples Complaints

“Not my circus, not my monkeys” This is a Polish proverb that means do not drag me into your drama or your issues as I do not want to get involved.

Some people would win a gold medal for moaning and being negative. These people seem to have a problem with every solution. When you are around these types of people it is important to tell yourself that their drama, their negativity, their lack of optimism is not your circus and certainly not your monkeys. In other words, control the amount of time you are around these individuals and avoid getting sucked into their negativity. A study conducted by the Warsaw School of Social Psychology determined that complaining leads to lower moods, negative emotions, and a decrease in life satisfaction and optimism. If you don’t feed their negativity, in time, they will soon realise and will often be less negative around you.

 In summary

Your life is what you think and the actions you take. If you apply the four suggestions above, you will create a positive mindset for yourself. In my experience people that have a more positive mindset are much more likely to achieve their goals, to live a life with purpose and a life that gets them jumping out of bed with excitement.
